Youth Day Camp 5.0 (August 21 & 22, 2024)

The fifth annual WLON Youth Day Camp took place over the course of two days in August 2024. This camp was designed to connect with youth ages 13+, fostering interest in education and training for environment-related careers, and sharing information regarding EWRRP and mercury in the environment. The camp was coordinated by Tyson Gardner, Robert Parenteau, and facilitated by SMM and KGS Group.
CAMP DAY 1: IISD-ELA FIELD TRIP
At the International Institute for Sustainable Development in the Experimental Lakes Area (IISD-ELA), hands-on activities replicated the work of the scientists at the IISD-ELA site. Experts discussed mercury accumulation with youth and shared various fish sampling techniques.
CAMP DAY 2: ACTIVITIES AT THE WLON WATERFRONT
Interactive learning activities explored the concepts of cumulative effects, environmental mapping and the connections between elements of nature and land use. Other activities included a relay race, a simulated environmental assessment, and an Anishinaabemowin species name quiz.
At the end of the two days, Elders and Knowledge Keepers took the time to speak with youth, uniting the concepts of camp and discussing the role of the individual in their community and in nature.

Thank you to everyone who attended Youth Camp 5.0!
